An apple a day may indeed keep the doctor away, according to a study of 34,000 postmenopausal women done by U.S. and Norwegian researchers.
The study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found apples are one of three foods -- along with red wine and pears -- that decrease the risk of mortality for both coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease among postmenopausal women.
Subjects selected for this research analysis were part of the ongoing Iowa Women's Health Study, which monitored participants on dietary intake and various health outcomes for nearly 20 years.
Researchers at the University of Minnesota and the University of Oslo said previous research indicated flavonoids have antioxidant properties that are linked to the reduction of oxidation of the bad cholesterol -- low-density lipoprotein.
Apples contain a wide variety of flavonoid compounds.
