LIndsay Mendez, who won the Tony for best featured actresses in a musical for Carousel, said in her acceptance speech, "When I moved to NY, I was told to change my last name from Mendez to Matthews or I wouldn't work".

Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles, who both made their Broadway debuts in recent seasons, will host the show at Radio City Music Hall.

As is to be expected in a room filled with multitalented actors, singers and other artists, the crowd obliged.

After winning best featured actor in a musical for The Band's Visit (which is about Israelis and Arabs getting along), Ar'iel Stachel emotionally paid tribute to his parents who were in the audience, "I have avoided so many events with them because for so many years of my life I pretended that I was not a Middle Eastern person".

One by one, the winners of "The Band's Visit" referenced the show's themes of acceptance and finding a common humanity.

Andrew Garfield has dedicated his Tony Award to the LGBT community. After 9/11 it was very, very hard for me.

Garfield won a Tony statue for lead actor for his role in the play Angels In America, where he plays the role of iconic gay character Prior Walter in 1980's America. And we all belong.

Garfield dedicated the award, his first Tony, to the LGBTQ community, for a "spirit that says no to oppression". The intimate show, "Springsteen on Broadway" - or as De Niro referred to it, "Jersey Boy" - features the Boss performing his music and sharing stories from his 2016 autobiography "Born to Run".

Expect to see the likes of Tina Fey representing "Mean Girls", as well as Andrew Garfield, Denzel Washington and Amy Schumer, who are all nominated for their work in plays this year.

(On a lighter note, he also gave a shout-out to Judy Garland's birthday.) Best musical revival went to "Once on This Island", in a surprise win over "My Fair Lady" and "Carousel".
