Microsoft and Amazon are working together to make Cortana and Alexa friends

Before telling you how to use Alexa/Cortana on Android, let me make it clear that you won't be able to wake up Alexa and Cortana using their wake words directly.

The goal of the partnership is to capitalize on each AI assistant's strengths: Alexa has considerable third-party support and a large install base and Cortana has integration with PC-centric features like Microsoft's own Office 365 suite.

The process itself also seemed too convoluted - asking Alexa to "open Cortana", for example, then waiting a beat before then asking Cortana a question.

In a demonstration, Saunders used an Amazon Alexa-powered Echo to "call" Cortana and to check her schedule for the day. "And we can't wait to see what you build", said Megan Saunders, general manager of Microsoft Cortana. And there's no denying that some things are easier to do and just work better with Alexa than they do with our Googley home assistant friend. Cortana very adeptly spoke to Saunders through Echo, read her schedule out stridently, then assisted her send an email to Taylor.

However, the demo mostly showed that this budding relationship between Alexa and Cortana needs some work. "We share a vision that there will be many intelligent agents working together to provide customers with a more helpful experience". However, you won't be able to properly activate Alexa using the Bixby button.

Of course, what people really wanted to hear about is when the Cortana-Alexa integration would go live, and unfortunately there was no news on that front.

It's important to note here, that Alexa's functionality seems to be limited at this point of time.

The Cortana-Alexa communication is now in a limited beta, but interested users can visit this website to receive notifications and updates about the project's development. These situations might instigate some of you to want to replace Google Assistant with Alexa or Cortana.
