It got to the point where (wife) Erica (Stoll) had to drag me out of the house and say we are going to go do something.

But he hit a poor wedge that led to bogey on the par-5 10th, atoned for that with a birdie on the par-5 15th, only to give back that shot with a three-putt bogey from 15 feet on No. 16.

Tiger Woods said he's on the verge of putting it all together and winning his first PGA tournament in five years - if he can just start rolling the ball a little better on the greens.

Mickelson had his lowest round of the season while McIlroy three-putted the 18th and still shot five under.

Peterson, a former American collegiate champion, led a group of five players by two strokes, while Woods missed two putts from inside five feet en route to a 71. He then added birdies at the 12th and 13th - failed to birdie the two easiest holes on the back, the 14th and 15th - and added another at the 17th.

"Today was a bit of a struggle through eight holes", said Day.

"I didn't putt well again", Wood told CBS television.

Woods closed with a 74 to finish at two-over-par 286 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte.

Compatriot Graeme McDowell had six birdies but a double bogey at the last resulted in a 67 and a two under total. The last time he played Quail Hollow on a Saturday, he tried to play out of the trees and made an 8 that took him out of contention in the PGA Championship. I didn't know what to expect. Hopefully, this weekend I'll hit it the way I've been hitting it and get a hot putter on the weekend. Starting from the same position as Woods, Peter Uihlein fired a career-best 62, making seven birdies and an eagle. "The '97 Masters and the 2000 U.S. Open, I didn't miss one like that under 10 feet for the week", Woods said.

Woods picked up six birdies to reach one-under 212 but finished the round on a sour note with a three-putt bogey on 18.

Saunders shot a 68 as he shaved one stroke off his previous round score for the second consecutive day.

Day carded 10-under through 54 holes. That 65 was as good as I could have played.

"I was so close to shooting about 7 under on that back nine, " Woods said after shooting 34 on the closing nine holes.

"San Antonio was really, really tight, and I like to hit my low drivers and I feel really confident with that", Niemann said.

Last year's PGA Championship, which was held at Quail Hollow, left many feeling like they'd just gone 72 holes in a title bout that should have ended much earlier with a towel and an extended stay in the trainer's room.
