Seattle Seahawks draft Shaquem Griffin, linebacker with one hand

Carroll said the intent is to start Griffin at weakside linebacker and let him use his speed in different areas on the field.

So I stopped short of rooting for the Seahawks to draft Shaquill's twin brother right up until the very moment the Seahawks picked him. "I'm glad that I have an opportunity to be here". I can't remember being this excited to see a player - not just because it's unprecedented to have a player reach the National Football League despite missing a left hand.

So now he joins twin brother Shaquill, a Seahawks cornerback who started 11 games as a rookie last season.

Don't get me wrong.

He has become the feel-good story this year and one of the most popular players in this draft because of his perseverance, outgoing personality and, of course, his talent.

Griffin, who had his hand amputated at age 4 but was never prevented from playing sports, put on a spectacular performance at the scouting combine in early March, running a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash and posting 20 reps in the bench press.

Griffin's college coach Scott Frost tweeted "About time", after the pick was made.

And perhaps in proper fashion, it unfolded in front of the die-hard fans who - like Griffin - stuck it out into the draft's less-hyped final day of picks.

"I couldn't breathe", Shaquem told ESPN after being drafted. He chose to spend the last day with his family at a nearby hotel watching. "That was the phone call I had been waiting for my entire life". The excitement, it's insane because you're around so many great guys in that setting and you're in the green room and you're moving around and seeing how the anxiety is building up.

I don't know if I agree that Shaquem should have been drafted in the first round, but he certainly should have been taken ahead of Callaway - hands down!. Me thinking about it, that moment, to be up on that stage and having the crowd go insane, it was like we had won the Peach Bowl all over again.
