Penguins hope Malkin, Hornqvist ready for Game 6 against Flyers

The Capitals were leading the series 3-0 and the Flyers were on the brink of elimination. Neuvirth made a few nice - if unsafe - saves, but he couldn't hold the lead after losing Rust behind the net.

But it was the short-handed goal late in the second period that was the difference maker. But in the end, he came up clutch to keep the Flyers in the series, and that's why he got the start.Jets dominate Wild to advanceThe Minnesota Wild were facing a do-or-die Game 5 in Winnipeg and, boy, things did not go their way, with the Wild losing 5-0 after never recovering from a four-goal onslaught in the first period. The Jets poured it on early, starting with a goal from Jacob Trouba just 31 seconds into the game, and that would have been the game victor on its own, but it didn't stop there. "We need to have a first period like we did in Game 3, and we can go on from there".

Stephenson didn't crack Washington's opening night roster and later cleared waivers but impressed head coach Barry Trotz early in the season with his urgent play. Claude Giroux, Valtteri Filppula and Matt Read also scored for the Flyers.

If a Game Five is necessary, they will move the series back to Philadelphia Sunday.

More interesting, the offensive-minded Penguins are averaging the fewest shots-against per game at just 24.4. A second period goal by Nicklas Backstrom to the high corner of the net was his only blemish of the day as he finished with 28 saves on 29 shots.

The team that scored first won all five games.

Welcome to the Battle of Pennsylvania, even if it took until the fifth game for the series to get a personality.

There's a chance the Flyers could have Sean Couturier in the lineup. Either way, Philadelphia knows it needs to find a way to recapture the resiliency it showed during the regular season when it overcame a litany of setbacks to return to the playoffs after a one-year absence.

It came back to haunt the Flyers when Bryan Rust scored on a wraparound against slow-to-react Neuvirth (30 saves) with eight minutes left in the second, knotting the score at 1-all.

One player who rarely has a problem shaking off a loss is goalie Matt Murray, who is 9-1 in his career in games immediately following a Penguins playoff loss. The Penguins had their way offensively for much of the series, but they were able to put up just two goals on Michal Neuvirth, who got the start because Brian Elliott has really struggled in this series. The plodding Filppula had his most impressive game as a Flyer, scoring a shorthanded goal that tied the game late in the second, setting up two other scores, and helping the Flyers frustrate Crosby (one assist, minus-2).

Watching from the stands or on television, it might have been the most dramatic moment of Game 5. Bergeron missed Game 4 on Thursday with an undisclosed injury. "I'm sure we're disappointed that we didn't get the job done (Friday), but we still get to go play hockey for a living, and things are all right".

Giroux scored after taking a pass from Jake Voracek, who picked up a loose puck behind the goal line. Less then two minutes after Guentzel's goal, the Penguins were on a power play looking a back breaking 3-1 lead.

It would not be long before the Flyers responded, though. Heading into the third period, neither team can quite pull away, as the Flyers fight for their season and the Penguins try to put them away. But Pittsburgh was not done and with Murray on the bench and an extra attacker on the ice, the Penguins continued to pepper Neuvirth. At the defensive end of the ice, they have been poor in the postseason so far as they come in ranked 14th in goals allowed, giving up 4.00 gpg, while also ranking 6th in shots allowed (31.2 spg) and 8th in penalty kill, allowing teams to convert on 20.8% of their chances.

The Flyers are due for a home win against Pittsburgh, so why not here in a huge situation. In Game 5, a 4-2 Flyers win that was tied 2-2 through much of the third period, Oleksiak played less than 10 minutes.
