Mets move 'pissed off' Matt Harvey to bullpen following latest poor start

Fast forward to 2018, Harvey has been demoted to the bullpen after four starts and an 0-2 record with a 6.00 ERA. His future is still in his own hands and it's up to him if he will soon land back in the New York Mets starting rotation.

Beginning Tuesday, Harvey will be available to pitch in relief.

"I think he made that pretty clear yesterday that he wants to be a starter", Callaway said Saturday.

Matt Harvey has had a bad and injury-filled couple of years. "And Dave and I are going to take the approach that we're gonna do everything we can to help him do that".

With the changes in the staff this season and the other pitchers in the rotation, Harvey's status came into question when, after the right-hander allowed six runs in six innings on Thursday in Atlanta, manager Mickey Callaway declined to guarantee him another start. The day on which he used to toe the rubber was known as a Harvey Day to Mets fans, but this may now be the end of days for the one-time ace.

Jacob deGrom started for the Mets yesterday and was absolutely fantastic.

Harvey was diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateal ligament in his right elbow, shutting him down for the season.

Hopefully, Harvey gets a sense of motivation through his skipper's decision.

"My performance hasn't been there, and I just have to do whatever I have to do to get back into the starting rotation", Harvey told reporters Saturday. Jeurys Familia entered the game and gave up the tying run, the Mets would lose the game and the series in 12 innings by a final of 7-2.

Despite the demotion to the bullpen, Harvey would likely be the top choice the next time the Mets need another starter.

Harvey, 29, hasn't been the same pitcher since 2016, when he had season-ending surgery to fix thoracic outlet syndrome in right shoulder.

However, maybe Harvey moving to the bullpen is a blessing in disguise for the former MLB All-Star.

Asdrubal Cabrera is the Met who has had the most success against Newcomb, going 5-for-9 with a double. Just like Severino did with the Yankees, he needs to make his contributions felt in the bullpen by producing quality innings and proving that he can get batters out without giving up runs. His 6.00 ERA was by far the highest in the rotation.
