Meek Mill performs during the 2015 BET Awards in Los Angeles, California, US, June 28, 2015.

Mill ended up serving five months of a 2-4 year sentence for violating probation on a decade-old drug and gun case. "I understand that many people of color across the country don't have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues", Meek shared.

Variety reported that Meek was let out on bail after a ruling from Pennsylvania's highest court.

Meek made his first public appearance after being released on bail as the special guest of Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin at Game 5 of the NBA Playoffs.

"In the meantime, I plan to work closely with my legal team to overturn this unwarranted conviction and look forward to reuniting with my family and resuming my music career", said Mill, whose last album "Wins and Losses" reached number three on the U.S. chart. The now-retired officer was among a list of police officers the prosecutor's office has sought to keep off the witness stand in cases across the city because of credibility questions. Everyone from Kevin Hart & T.I. to G Herbo & Trey Songz have all taken to social media throughout the day to celebrate Meek's release, and now his Roc Nation boss, Jay Z, has chimed in as well.

"The public can always count on the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office to try to pursue justice in a fair and evenhanded manner", spokesman Ben Waxman said.

Joe Tacopina, one of Meek's lawyers, tells NPR Music in a statement.

The Supreme Court of PA made the decision to overrule Judge Genece Brinkley's conviction after Brinkley was criticised for "holding a grudge" against the defendant and "keeping him in prison" by denying the rapper's bail last week, even though prosecutors were asking that his conviction be overturned "because of a dirty cop". She said the court "has impartially and without prejudice presided over numerous proceedings in this matter since 2008". Although Williams has repeatedly sought to have Brinkley removed from the case, the Supreme Court, however, rejected that request Tuesday, but said Brinkley "may opt to remove herself" from the case.
