A knife attack at a middle school in China left seven children dead and 12 others injured on Friday, according to officials.

Male born in 1990 on April 20 this year in Shaanxi province attacked the children when they returned home after the school day.

The attacker had been bullied at school and harboured a hatred of children, the report by state broadcaster CCTV said.

The site of the attacks was No. 3 Middle School in Mizhi county, Yulin. The injured students, nine girls and three boys, have all been sent to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

The suspect was apparently seeking revenge for having been picked on, the Mizhi government's official microblog said on Saturday.

He said chose to take a dagger and kill people on Friday because he hated his classmates. The 28-year-old chose to take his anger out on the current students - killing five girls and two boys, whose ages were unknown.

The suspect was identified as Zhao Moumou of Mizhi County.

Knife attacks are not uncommon in the country, but this is one of the most serious incidents in recent times. In February, a woman was stabbed to death by a knife-wielding man, who then went on to injure 12 others in a Beijing shopping mall.
