The writing was on the wall for Alex Smith ever since the Kansas City Chiefs traded up with the Buffalo Bills in the 2017 National Football League draft to select Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The third-year cornerback, coming to the Kansas City Chiefs in a reported trade that would send quarterback Alex Smith to the Redskins, went through a series of emotions on social media Tuesday as news swirled about the move.
The deal can not be officially announced until the 2018 league begins March 14.
Smith, 33, played five seasons with the Chiefs, throwing for 102 touchdowns and 33 interceptions and four trips to the playoffs. "The Jets are projected to have more than $70 million in cap space this year". In his one game of action, which came in the last game of this past season - his rookie year - Mahomes displayed some solid progression.
The Chiefs suffered a shocking exit at the hands of the Titans in the wild card round earlier this month and although Smith has an excellent record in Kansas City, it looks as though they are looking to the future. "Just being there in Kansas City, getting to work with him, seeing a guy that for some reason people critique all the time, I mean, the guy's a victor".More news: The European Central Bank expectedly kept the key interest rates unchanged
It's hard to make any case for the Bills to get into the bidding for Cousins, who is expected to cost about $25 million a year. But it's unclear if they can make an enticing pitch given overall average talent, plus the fact that their best player, tailback LeSean McCoy, will be 30 before opening day. Between the draft pick and cap relief, Kansas City general manager Brett Veach will have the opportunity to add pieces to help Mahomes, or upgrade the defense (that's already started with the Fuller addition). Cleveland.com reported that the Browns did try to complete a trade, but if they did yet weren't willing to offer a second-round pick when they have three, it's odd - to say the least. He has been the Chiefs' starting quarterback the last five seasons, including four playoff appearances. Immediately viewed as a puzzling move for a Washington team that seems to be content treading water, it will undoubtedly become one of the most polarizing deals of the offseason.
There is only one certainty out of this trade and that is that Kirk Cousins is going to get paid.
The other scenario involves the Colts' ability to trade back in the draft if they desire to do so. Quarterbacks are the most sought-after players, and now that the Redskins will presumably no longer be drafting a quarterback to replace Cousins, some interesting hypotheticals are cropping up.
Smith is "one of the best competitors and teammates I've ever been around", Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce posted on Twitter.
