Czech snowboarder causes shock to win super-G on borrowed skis

Her amazement was clear after crossing the line, while Veith offered gracious congratulations to the shock champion.

Ledecka, who now ranks 43rd on the World Cup super-G standings and has never finished higher than 19th in the discipline at a World Cup event, made history by even competing in Friday's race. It wasn't just a major upset on an Olympian scale. "Better stay with us and don't go snowboarding".

Whatever the case, Shiffrin applauded Ledecka's efforts.

"'Til today, I thought I am a better snowboarder", Ledecka said.

To make matters even worse for Christie, who was disqualified from all three of her events at the 2014 Games but is expected to recover for next week's 1000m after avoiding any broken bones, her boyfriend - Hungary's Shaolin Sandor Liu - also crashed in the men's 1000m final.

The two previous medals were both bronze, won by Sarka Strachova in Vancouver in 2010 and Olga Charvatova in 1984 in Sarajevo. Goggia, 25, got her first World Cup win less than a year ago, but is an up-and-coming speed star. So perhaps then, it made sense why Ledecka refused to remove her goggles at the post-race news conference.

Now she has the chance to be the first to not only race in ski and snowboard, but win. Entering the 2018 Winter Olympics, Ledecka had never even put up a top-15 finish on the circuit.

The 33-year-old came out aggressively and had a clean and near-perfect run - until the very end. She finished 0.38sec behind the victor in a tie for sixth.

Ledecka wasn't merely a dark-horse in the event.

Should she win another gold medal, it would elevate the scale of her feat to another level entirely.

Ledecka, who is the first athlete to compete in both skiing and snowboarding at the Olympics, said she could not believe she had won at first.

Following that, she also started to compete in alpine skiing.

Not only did Ledecka deprive Veith of what looked like a rare double, she pushed Vonn further down the leaderboard after the American paid the price for an error at the bottom of the course.

Synchronize your watches. From the orloj astronomical clock in Prague to Ski Time Square in Steamboat Springs, it's time for one big righteous party, dude. In snowboarding, though, she placed sixth in the parallel slalom and seventh in GS.

Alpine skiing medal action at Pyeongchang 2018 is due to resume tomorrow with the men's giant slalom. In an era of heightened specialization among athletes in all fields, Ledecka showed that diversifying one's talents is indeed possible.

Switzerland's Sarah Hoefflin and compatriot Mathilde Gremaud claimed the two top spots in the women's Ski Slopestyle on Saturday and were joined by Great Britain's Isabel Atkin who secured bronze. Klapac competed for the Czechoslovak hockey team in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

It's hard to overstate just how much of an upset this was.
