Naby Keita will not join Liverpool in the January transfer window, with current club RB Leipzig moving to end speculation surrounding the short-term future of the Guinea midfielder.

Keita is scheduled to move to Liverpool over the summer, per the transaction struck between the clubs last summer.

Liverpool were dealt a significant blow in their pursuit of Naby Keita.

The conditions of the deal meant that Keita was to remain with RB Leipzig for one more season before joining Anfield this summer.

Liverpool are willing to pay a premium to get Keita early but Leipzig want to convince the player to stay put until the end of the season.

Keita scored for Leipzig on Saturday as the home side defeated Schalke 3-1 to move to second in the Bundesliga.

But sporting director Ralf Rangnick insisted the player would not leave, saying: "Even Naby and his advisor have accepted this decision".

But RB Leipzig ended all possibility of an early move for Keita with after releasing a statement on Sunday.

"As everyone knows, we are not a selling club", Ragnick stressed. A transfer would only have been possible if we had reached an amicable solution in the sense of an exorbitant additional transfer fee.

Liverpool play Manchester City in a few hours and Jurgen Klopp will be focusing on the huge clash before he turns his attention back to how he intends to proceed this season.
