Over 30 killed, dozens injured in South Korea hospital blaze

At least 37 people have been killed and more than 70 injured after a fire broke out in a South Korean hospital on Friday.

The fire occurred around 7:30 a.m.at Sejong Hospital's emergency room and quickly spread to other parts of the hospital, according to authorities.

He says most victims died from suffocation.

The hospital was not fitted with a sprinkler system. Seok Gyeong-sik also said he would do his best to take care of the incident. Right beside Sejong Hospital sits Sejong Nursing Hospital now.

Friday's blaze is the worst fire the country has witnessed in more than a decade.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in convened an emergency meeting with his staff to discuss the hospital blaze, the presidential Blue House said.

Of them, 94 were in a nursing home for the elderly next to the main building, and were all safely evacuated.

It has been reported that about 200 people were in the Sejong Hospital when the fire broke out.

Battling fire for approximately two hours, fire fighters evacuated almost 200 people from the hospital to safety. Media footage showed at least one patient being carried from the hospital on another person's back, covered in blankets.

Interior minister Kim Boo-kyum traveled to Miryang to apologize for the fire.

This fatal fire comes just a month after a fire in a sports center building that killed 29 people and led to criminal charges for negligence by the building's owners. "He also called on them to utilize government resources to attend to damage from today's fire".
