The other top finalists were Lamar Jackson, the Louisville quarterback who won the 2016 Heisman, and Bryce Love, Stanford's star running back.

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield holds up the Heisman Trophy after winning the award on Saturday night in New York City. He finished third nationally in passer rating in 2015, set the single-season FBS passer rating record past year and is on pace to break his own record this season. Mayfield's staggering stats (4,340 yards, 41 TD passes, just five picks) made him an easy choice.

On Saturday night, former Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2011, used Twitter to make reference to Mayfield's crude gesture in a victory against the Jayhawks on November 18. He also ran for 310 yards and five more touchdowns on the ground.

Mayfield also discussed overcoming some difficulties, and although he didn't name them specifically, his February arrest for public intoxication and his one-series suspension for making a lewd gesture toward Kansas Jayhawks players this season may have been among the incidents he was referencing. Two signature moments stamped his Heisman campaign: a 31-16 road win over Big Ten champion Ohio State in which he threw for 386 yards and three scores, and a wild 62-52 win over Oklahoma State.

Mayfield still has some unfinished business to attend to this season.

Mayfield's Sooners will be back in action on January 1 when they take on No. 3 Georgia in the Rose Bowl.

"It's been a tough journey", Mayfield said.
