A weight is being lifted off the shoulders of hundreds of East Tennessee families who may be worrying about affording Christmas gifts.

All of Salvation Army of Saginaw County's programs are supported in some way by the red kettle drive, Wicke said, adding that it's the organizations biggest fundraiser of the year. An abundance of toys now line the floors of the building for the almost 800 children who were placed on the annual Angel Tree.

"We're down about 12 percent this year on our kettle income", Broome said.

Like past year, instead of being included in the hampers items like turkey and ham have been replaced by gift certificates to better facilitate the needs of recipients. A year ago we had a small fire in our home. "I don't know what my 1-year-old wants; he's just a baby".

Last year, The Salvation Army in Kalispell served more than 28,000 hot meals. The major fundraising campaigns for both the United Way and Salvation Army are underway in Door County and finish at the end of the year. "So it's been a hardworking one, but it's so neat to see it come to fruition".

Rodgers said the Salvation Army could use the assistance of high school students during distribution day on December 20.

"I've been out here in the rain, the cold, the wind", he said.

"This is a great time to give back to your community or to help those out who you may never meet", Ross said.

"We also provide counseling, "Pathway of Hope", which allows families to receive counseling to help them become more self-sustaining", he said.

For the past two days inside the crowded Salvation Army Church hall volunteers have been busy preparing for next week's Christmas hamper distribution.

But those who stick it out, she said, are excellent.
