Pope Francis, Trump meet in Vatican for private talk

On Wednesday, Pres. Trump took his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner - both of whom are observant Jews - to meet the Pope.

"All eyes were on the Vatican on Wednesday when Trump, along with members of his family and political inner circle, shared a private audience with the pontiff".

President Trump's commitment to fighting extremism and intolerance will win approval from the Pope, as will his determination to bring peace to the Middle East. But after a half-hour meeting behind closed doors, Francis seemed to have cheered up considerably.

The two exchanged gifts after the meeting.

Mr Trump and the Pope have expressed opposing views in the past on issues such as immigration and climate change, and the two men exchanged sharp words during the presidential campaign a year ago.

"The @Potus and I are looking forward to our visit with His Holiness Pope Francis @Pontifex".

"(Jackie) and the Pope spoke French to each other, and the Pope, who was anxious about how to address her, said, "Ah, Jacqueline!" when they met", Andersen Brower said. The pope gave Trump a collection of books he wrote, as well as a medal crafted by an Italian artist featuring an olive branch symbolizing peace.

Pope Francis' interpreter could be heard translating a comment to the First Lady: "What do you give him to eat?"

"It is my desire that you become an olive tree to construct peace", the Pope said in Spanish.

President Donald Trump is poised to call on Pope Francis, the famously humble pontiff with whom he has publicly clashed.

The dessert is obviously very rich - could the pope have been poking fun at the president's stature? Earlier this month, Breitbart News' James Delingpole reported that a prominent bishop had also predicted a Trump "conversion" on climate change thanks to the Pope's intervention.

Traveling as a couple can be stressful, and the first lady and her husband aren't immune to that, five-star hotels and Secret Service and all.

The Trump team is due to fly to Brussels on Wednesday afternoon for meetings with European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials before returning to Italy late Thursday for the G7 summit in Sicily on Friday and Saturday.
