Free perinatal mental health support sessions launched in city

Dr. Nancy Babbitt says, "May is national mental health awareness month".

Dr Jonathan Coleman still carries a key from his time as a medical student at Kingseat Hospital, as "a reminder of how things used to be".

The Health Minister today announced a "Claytons" mental health funding increase that will have to be found from within existing District Health Board budgets.

This week has been designated as the 66 Annual Mental Health Week by the Canadian Mental Health Association.

But Dr Coleman said a transformational change has been under way, moving from an institutional model of mental health care to one where most people with problems received treatment in the community.

May 1-7, 2017 is Mental Health Week. We will also use this opportunity to get together and show what we are doing to promote mental health.

People with symptoms of mental-health disorders and diseases respond positively to social support; yet as a society, we tend to hide these types of health issues for fear of criticism, derision or contempt.

A growing number of mental health providers are considering closing their doors or curtailing services because of lack of funding. The "Directing Change" film screening will take place at the Eureka Theater during Saturday's Arts Alive! "This new investment has the potential to help countless students struggling with their mental health, and we look forward to working with the province to securing greater, more predictable and more sustainable investments in mental health at Ontario colleges and universities".

According to prescribing trends, Northern Ireland has significantly higher levels of depression than the rest of the United Kingdom, with nearly 1 in 5 individuals showing signs of a possible mental health problem.

Whilst the Government admits the problems highlighted by the Report - including a lack of funding and an over-strained mental health service - the response fails to address the deeper, systemic problems caused by years of neglect of the mental health system.

Much of that work will happen through the Government's "social investment" approach, which aims to use data to better identify where money should be spent, and if it makes enough difference.

Funding for the quality initiative will run for the next five years.
