The Korea Mission Centre would harness resources, capabilities, and authorities of the agency in addressing the challenges being posed by the North Korean regime, CIA director Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday.
North Korea is making less headlines these days, but that doesn't mean the threat has vanished, according to US intelligence officials.
The CIA has announced the establishment of a new "Korea Mission Center" which will be focused exclusively on North Korea, saying it will coordinate all CIA resources and the resources of all other USA spy agencies in efforts against the "threats" posed by North Korea.
A veteran CIA operations officer allegedly has been tapped to lead the mission center as the assistant director of Korea, though the agency did not give the officer's name.
The move comes as North Korea appears poised to undertake its sixth nuclear test.
The new organization appears to be the first time that the Central Intelligence Agency has created a mission center focused on one specific country: mission centers are usually regionally focused.
