Although Trump's decision isn't uncommon - Obama was the only president to make his visitor logs public - it's attracting attention because it's a departure from eight years of precedent at a time of growing calls for greater governmental transparency.

U.S. President Donald Trump's Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Monday defended the decision to keep White House visitor logs secret, but did not bring up the national security explanation. The changes have drawn intense criticism from government ethics advocates across the city. However, a 2013 court ruling determined the president is not legally obligated to disclose White House visitor records under the Freedom of Information Act.

Barron will be the first boy to live at the White House since John F Kennedy Jr, who was a toddler, in 1963. In the past three months, he has also taken some high profile guests to his Florida property, including England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and China's president Xi Jinping.

After some litigation, the Obama White House began releasing the visitor records late in 2009, Obama's first year in office. Udall, who introduced a bill last month to mandate publication of visitor logs, asked Friday. It was the first administration to make a practice of routinely releasing the information.
